What is the Temple of the Moon? 🌙

The Temple of the Moon is an impressive Inca construction located on the outskirts of Cusco, renowned for its mysticism and cultural significance. This temple was carved into the stone of a cave, where you’ll find zoomorphic figures such as the serpent, puma, and condor, representing the Inca trilogy: the world of the dead, the earthly world, and the world of the gods.

Represented Icons:

  • 🐍 Serpent: The world of the dead.

  • 🦙 Puma: The earthly world.

  • 🦅 Condor: The world of the gods.

Inside, you’ll find a finely carved ceremonial table, likely used for religious rituals or even embalming. The temple is also known as the Temple of Fertility due to the cave’s shape, which resembles a womb, and the openings through which sunlight filters, symbolising fertility.

Location: Where is the Temple of the Moon? 📍

Just 2.5 km from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, in the Qenqo Chico sector (near Sacsayhuamán), the Temple of Fertility is easily accessible. You can walk there (approximately a 40-minute hike) or, if you prefer more comfort, take a taxi for just 10 soles (~3 USD), which will get you there in about 20 minutes.

Why is it called the Temple of the Moon?  🌱

The name is derived from the natural formations inside the cave. The structure resembles a womb, and the upper openings allow sunlight to filter through, symbolising the process of conception and fertility. It is not uncommon to see tourists performing ancestral ceremonies to honour the land and ask for fertility.
